An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart to evaluate the size, strength, and overall function of the heart, including the heart valves and other structures. After imaging the heart to obtain measurements and assess the heart chambers and valves, our Cardiac Sonographer will send the images and data to a cardiologist for interpretation, who will then send a report to your physician for follow up. Our department also performs stress echocardiograms.
For echocardiograms, please wear comfortable two-piece clothing. For a stress echocardiogram, patients should fast for four hours before the exam. This test requires the patient to walk on a treadmill, so in addition to wearing two-piece clothing, you should also wear walking or athletic shoes. .
