SUPERVISORY SKILLS: Supervises departmental support staff
JOB DESCRIPTION: Responsible for planning, organizing and directing all aspects of the laboratory department.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manages laboratory services in accordance with clinical and governmental standards and within an established budget.
- Facilitates the development of a department mission, goals, policies, procedures and work standards.
- Ensures accurate and appropriate completion of laboratory tests including the processing of referred laboratory testing.
- Compiles and analyzes data on departmental productivity, activity, finances; prepares and presents requested information to administration.
- Coordinates cost-effective ordering, receiving and inventory of laboratory supplies with Purchasing Manager.
- Selects, orients, trains, monitors, and evaluates employees. Oversees work assignments and daily operations.
- Reviews department performance and ensures compliance with accreditation, legal and all other regulatory requirements.
- Complies with all policies and OSHA regulations related to safety, cleanliness, and infection control.
- Writes and maintains up to date laboratory procedures.
- Be able to demonstrate current competencies related to position.
REQUIREMENTS:
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Certified as MT (ASCP)
EDUCATION: BS/BA preferably in health related field.
EXPERIENCE: Minimum of ten years progressively responsible positions in the laboratory, including two years of supervisory experience.
KNOWLEDGE:
- Knowledge of clinical laboratory procedures and practices.
- Knowledge of standards needed to evaluate the department and recommend improvement.
- Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to monitor quality control checks.
- Knowledge to be able to determine needs and evaluate equipment for purchase.
- Knowledge of medical terminology to interact with medical staff regarding laboratory procedures and results.
- Knowledge of safety requirements to provide instructions/recognize and correct hazardous conditions.
SKILLS:
- Skilled in performing a full range of laboratory tests.
- Skilled in anticipating and reacting calmly to emergency situations.
- Skilled in identifying and resolving problems.
- Skilled in providing guidance and instruction to staff.
- Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with clients, medical staff and the public.
ABILITIES:
- Ability to evaluate utilization statistics and other data and make program recommendations.
- Ability to determine budget needs and maintain expenditures within a budget.
- Ability to work and communicate clearly with all departments and personnel levels.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:
- Must be able to walk, stand, sit, bend and reach.
- Must have excellent hand-eye coordination.
- Must have manual dexterity.
ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Combination of laboratory and office settings.
- Exposure to communicable disease, toxic substances, body fluids, fumes and other conditions common to a clinical environment.
